From M4A to MP3: what to expect
M4A is the usual container for AAC audio (iPhone voice memos, Apple music). Your browser’s decoder reads it and the tool saves it as MP3, which virtually every player can open. DRM-protected files cannot be read.
Are my files uploaded?
No. ShiftAny Audio processes your audio directly on your device: this tool runs in your browser and never sends your files to any server.
Limits and metadata
ShiftAny sets no duration or size limits: the real ceiling is your device’s memory, because the audio is decompressed to be processed and an hour of stereo takes more than 1 GB. With very long files, we warn you before loading them. The new file contains only the audio: tags (title, artist, cover art) are not copied.
Frequently asked questions
Does it work with iPhone voice memos?
Yes: they are usually unprotected M4A files. For speech, 64 or 96 kbps gives a small, clear file.
What about songs bought on iTunes?
Only if they have no DRM. Protected files cannot be decoded in the browser.
Is quality lost going from M4A to MP3?
A little: both formats are lossy and the audio is re-encoded once. At 192 kbps or more the difference is very hard to hear; for speech it is not noticeable.
