Normalize the volume of your audio for free

Bring each file’s peak just below 0 dBFS, or match its loudness to −14, −16 or −23 LUFS with the true peak under control.

Your audio never leaves your device. 100% local processing in your browser, with no usage caps.

  • Your files travel straight between Google and your browser. They never touch a server of ours, because we don’t have any.
  • Processing runs on your device, exactly as it does with a file from your computer.
  • The app can only access the files you pick and the ones it saves to your Drive. Never the rest.

How to use “Normalize Audio”

  1. Add the audio files you want to bring to the same level.
  2. Choose to normalize by peak or by loudness (LUFS) and the target; a −1 dB ceiling is recommended.
  3. Click “Listen 10 s” if you want to check it.
  4. Choose MP3 or WAV, click “Normalize audio” and download the result.

Peak or loudness normalization

By peak, the highest sample on any channel is measured and just enough gain is applied to bring it to the chosen ceiling: the stereo balance and the dynamics do not change. By loudness, the perceived volume of the whole file is measured according to ITU-R BS.1770-4, the measure Spotify and YouTube use, and brought to the LUFS target; if raising it would push any true peak over the ceiling, a limiter holds it back without distortion. With several files, each one is adjusted separately. Peak normalization does not even out perceived volume: two files with the same peak can sound differently loud.

Are my files uploaded?

No. ShiftAny Audio processes your audio directly on your device: this tool runs in your browser and never sends your files to any server.

Limits and metadata

ShiftAny sets no duration or size limits: the real ceiling is your device’s memory, because the audio is decompressed to be processed and an hour of stereo takes more than 1 GB. With very long files, we warn you before loading them. The new file contains only the audio: tags (title, artist, cover art) are not copied.

Frequently asked questions

Which ceiling should I choose: −0.1, −0.5 or −1 dB?

−1 dB if you are exporting to MP3: encoding can push peaks up slightly, and this way they do not clip. −0.1 dB makes the most of the level in WAV.

Can normalizing lower the volume?

Yes, if the audio’s peak is already above the chosen ceiling (for example, a 32-bit WAV that goes over 0 dBFS). In that case it is lowered just enough not to clip.

Peak or loudness (LUFS)?

Peak if you only want to use the available level without clipping. Loudness if you want several songs or episodes to sound equally loud, or to meet a platform’s target.

How is this different from “Dynamics Compressor”?

Normalizing raises or lowers the whole file by the same amount. The “Dynamics Compressor” changes the dynamics: it brings the quiet parts closer to the loud ones. The usual order is to compress first and normalize afterwards.
