Automatic: each file is brought to −23 LUFS before the effects, so that the compressor acts the same on all of them. The “Output” sets the final volume.

What to remove

AutoWork out the threshold from each file’s noise

Anything below each recording’s background noise counts as silence: it works the same in a quiet studio as with an air conditioner in the background.

AutoFit the tone to each file

Fit to

Measures the tone of each file and brings it closer to a well-recorded voice (16 studio voices): muddiness, presence and air, up to ±6 dB and only where it strays from the norm. A voice that already sounds good barely changes. After running you will see what was done to each file, and a warning if any seems to be of another type.

AutoWork out the threshold for each voice

Voice type

Measures the “s” sounds in each file and only reduces what goes beyond normal for a well-recorded voice. A voice that already sounds good barely changes.

Validated with spoken voice. For singing, choose “Sung voice”; on a full mix it would also turn down the cymbals.

Preset

AutoWork out threshold and gain for each file

Finds, in each file, the threshold that gives the preset’s compression and the gain that keeps its volume, whatever the recording level. If a voice already arrives with little dynamics, it compresses half as much.
